an old fireplace….please help?

by Fire Places on July 13, 2010

I have discovered that as i live in a victorian property that is highly likely that we have a chimney so i will be able to have a real fire; we have many features a chimney breast, chimney pots and in another room we have a fully working one.

But the fireplace has been out of use for a long time and an electric fire that you turn on and off has been in the fireplace.

I would like to know how much it would cost to get the chimney cleared and cleaned out so that we are able to have a real fire?

What are the tests needed to be carried out and how much will it cost in total?

Thanks

Contact a fireplace shop that sells new fireplaces. They might have trained technicians that can check the condition of the chimney. Some chimney sweeps also are qualified.
No one on the Internet can give you an answer as to costs without first seeing the fireplace/chimney to determine what it would take to repair it.
do not go to the big box stores and expect to find qualified clerks to help. You need qualified people so a fireplace shop that sells wood burners can be a good start.

The chimney needs to be checked for holes and cracks. It is usually best to have a professional do this. Chimney sweeps probably do this.

Your best bet is to contact a chimney sweep they will clean and insepct the chimney and should be able to tell you if it can be used for wood again. the cost is very dependent on your location and if the chimney needs repaired
