i would like my wood buring fireplace to be more effecent. I see on line that firebacks cast iron and stanless steal help but do they really is there any other way to make it di a better job warming the room

Hard to say, but I believe they work okay. Depends on how much money you would spend doing the alterations.
Check with a fireplace accessory store to see if "Heatilator" log grates are still available. They come with a built-in fan. They are a multi tube type grate that circulates the room air thru the tubes heated by the fire.
I had one a number of years ago that worked great.
