can anyone give me some advise on moving a house?

by Fire Places on June 3, 2010

I have a very old victorian home that is on pillows, it was my grandmothers home it has a lot of sentimental value and I don’t want to lose it. It has 12 foot ceilings throughout, and large cathedral poles in the living room, and 3 fireplaces. It needs work but it has a lot of potential. I want to move this house 70 miles from where it is now, the place I want to bring it to is in the country and it is beautiful there, just as beautiful as this home. Can someone give me some advise on what I have to do to make this dream of mine come true. I really dont want to lose this house, but I have to move, and I cant afford to build.

Get a pro to do it, it’s the only way!

there are companies that do it, even split the house in 2 if needed to move it that far safely….but be prepared to pay much more than the house is physically worth!

70 Miles—-get a pro. If you try that on your own you will have allot more structural damage than you want. Besides someone who does it for a living will get permits and has thousands of dollars worth of equipment to do it right.

Definitely hire a professional house moving company. It’s really expensive, but if u r determined to do this, then u must preserve the house as much as possible during the transport

the process of moving a house even a small one is monumental, but it goes like this .. first thing needed is permits and clearances from utility companies etc, before you ever attempt to move. If you get an all clear (not easy or cheap ) then you have to find a company to actually move the house. the house you describe will be difficult not impossible. the actual job goes like this. all utilities have to be shut off,the water and sewage disconnected.house jacks and major beams need to be put under the house. thru the foundation so that the whole house is then able to be raised off the foundation, this accomplished (hopefully a wide load trailer can be driven under the beams.Of course this means thru the foundation wall which may mean excavating a road to the street. do you get the picture a 70 mile move with a house that big may cost $30,000 to 50,000 if all goes well. did i tell you about the new foundation and new sewer and new electric etc at the new site. BUY A new home, sell the other intact it was made to stay there.I was offered a home like that all I had to do was move it not worth it… Sorry

I am afraid that it will cost you plenty to have it moved. There are companies that do that kind of work but rarely move a house that far. They dig under the foundation and make a ramp and place wheeled contraptions under the house, jack it up and pull it off the foundation onto the road. Much preparation is involved as the building must be reinforced and depending on it’s size separeted into sections. Check in the "Yellow Pages" under House and Building Movers or similar catagories and get estimates on how much this undertaking will cost.

Seriously, if you can’t afford to build, your surely can’t afford to move it. I’d be willing to bet to move that house seventy miles, you’d be looking at anywhere from 100k to 250k. You can call a house moving company and get an idea, but remember, you can’t hold them to it, but just to get an idea of a ballpark figure.

Besides, if it is too tall, how are you going to get it UNDER the bridges???

wow ! that is an extremely expensive proposition………….

call a few house movers in the area , and see just how sentimental you can afford to be ………..

best of luck !
