I have a wood stove in the garage getting hooked up this week. It has the fire bricks on the sides and on the bottom. Should I get a grate or something to keep the fire off the flat bottom to get more air?

you got it!….its the same thing i have to do with our charcoal grill…i have to open the door on the bottom and raise the coals up a little (i have 4 height settings) so that the coals will burn hotter….fire cant breathe without air
