Does anyone have suggestions on getting wax out of brick?

by Fire Places on May 21, 2010

We have a fireplace surrounded in brick and over the years candles have dripped wax on the bricks. The house is up for sale and I would like to clean it up a bit.

Dont know why, but Im not surprised that there is a website on how to remove candle wax from things… It doesnt specifically say bricks, but one of the other textures solutions might help you

edit: spoke too soon – found one for bricks…

Question: Candle Wax on Brick Fireplace. Is the best way to try to iron this off a la fabric style? Is there a better way, or are ironing or carbon tetrachloride the only solutions? Thanks.(Ref:0166)

Answer: Candle wax can be dissolved in carbon tetrachloride, ("Dabitoff") however it is toxic and should not be used indoors unless there is very good ventilation. Placing a garment in the freezer or applying ice can make the wax brittle and it can then be broken up. Please give us feedback on this one as it is a frequently asked question. Use a Iron to melt it off

The above answers sound like they work. I myself have had a similar problem with my fireplace. I dont know how porous your brick is but mine was fairly porous leading to problems of getting it out of the holes. I use a hot air gun not that much different than a hair dryer. Once I got the wax to its melting point I used soft absorbent cloth (bath towel) and Q-tips to wipe up the wax and remove from the holes. I should mention that before I started with the gun I scraped off as much as I could by hand. It was a very tedious task and I wouldnt want to do it again but this is what worked for me. I dont envy you at all. Good luck! J
