We’ve just moved into our new home which has a very big stone fireplace in the living room. We will never light a fire but would still like it to be a focal point, we’ve thought of buying a grate/bowl and filling it with fairy lights or fitting spot lights at the top and putting logs in a grate…any ideas would be great! Thanks!

I don’t light fires in mine either, but I do use a rack with several candles in it that make a nice, cozy feeling without the mess. Something like this would work for you:

You could always install a modern-looking wood-burning stove. They look great, generate lots of heat and are practically carbon-neutral.
by blowin’ the (BEEP) out of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats what i call class!!
A big fireplace probably has a decent sized hearth as well. If it were me, I’d start a collection of interesting potted plants to fill the fireplance and hearth, like a minijungle in front of the fireplace. Because you aren’t actually changing it it gives the option of returning the fireplace to it’s actual use.
You could also tile over the whole thing, although how practical this would be, and the design work you could do with your tile would be determined by the size of the stones.
I love the beautifull things suggested by MAB5. Use those and maybe a touch of modern art over the fireplace.
