How do you hang things on brick walls and stone fireplaces?

by Fire Places on May 5, 2010

I have a stone fireplace in my room and would really like to hang a canvas up on it, but I’m concerned about putting nail holes into the grout (or whatever that thing is called that is in between the stones) and how I’d repair it if I made a mistake. I’d also like to put some art up on an exposed brick wall in a guest room. How can I safely hang things on these surfaces?

drill and insert plastic anchors and then the appropriate screw…you dont want a big honkin’ tapcon screw holding up pictures and paintings…drilling the mortar joint will be okay for the weight you are talking about…so get a masonry drill bit and some plastic anchors and dont worry about a hammer drill for a couple of small holes…ask your hardware dude to help you size everything…

You have to use concrete screws and drill them in with a drill. Depending on the weight of it you would want to drill into the brick not the grout because the grout can crumble and make your piece fall down. We just hung a tv on our brick fireplace and it weighs 150 lbs. If you take it down you shouldn’t notice the holes to bad depending on the color of brick. But I’m sure they sell some kind of filler at the stores for the holes.

You need a hammer drill and masenary bits, otherwise you’ll never get through the brick. A small amount of joint compound will cover holes and stick to the grout part of the brick.
