the wall is normal 2×4 studs and t-111 exterior. i left a 4" gap around the dimensions of the fireplace but need to know how to seal the wall to the fireplace. it is a large cast iron fireplace. it is not a pot belly stove but a full size fireplace. i have been told i need fireboard. is that all?

Wow, that sounds like a very big undertaking. In order to get an answer i would suggest going to Home Depot. They will advise you on the correct materials.
Please don’t guess. The fire board sounds like it would be a necessity.
