I just bought an antique fireplace mantel, I want to use it as a focal point in living room.?

It is only the frame, it will be painted white, probably with candles, any suggestions for base and back.

It’s really popular now to place a mirrow drectly on a mantle and clutter things around it. I’ve seen where they put a mirror in the ‘hole’ and place candles in front. It really had a nice apprearance. To make it more realistic consider building a step and tiling it and then place the woodwork on top of the step.

A friend bought a mantel and an electric heater made to use with mantels. Search the web, you can surely find the heater. It looks very real and puts out good heat.
If you don’t want that look, perhaps some white bark logs with holes drilled to fit small votives for tea lights. Or a group of pillar candles with a fire place screen in front.

DON"T PAINT IT! the old way is what makes it a antique, to draw people to look at it add the mirror and the candles and drape a white sheer curtain around the top of it and let it hang over the sides as well—–NO PAINT!

An elaborate fireplace screen would help draw attention – although it might take attention away from the mantel. It’s something to consider anyhow.
