i am thinking about installing a small cast iron stove looking fire place, more for function than form. i am wondering if I can hook up the chimney to the existing exhaust vent for my gas furnace?

Pick up the phone and call the stove shop where you might buy the stove and ask them. Those are the people that know answers to all the questions you might ask. My instincts tell me you cannot hook up into the existing exhaust vent.
I have an electric one. They don’t require any venting.
Search dimplex. They make lots of different styles.
Sorry, your direct vent gas furnace needs it own vent otherwise it could back up CO2 into your home.
You are going to have to vent this fireplace separately. All direct vent units are this way. You can share an air intake with them, but not an exhaust.
