The electric fireplace are more for looks than for heating results. You are better off buying a portable heater if you are looking for heating performance.
Electric heat is electric heat, basically. Any 1500 watt electric heater puts out exactly the same amount of heat as any other 1500 watt heater. You can buy a $15 heater, or a $600 heater, take your pick based on style and, laughably, maybe durability. But they’re all going to take the same amount of electricity, and they’re going to put out the same amount of heat.
Don has it right. All heating appliances are equally "efficient" at producing heat. Some might feel warmer because they radiate more heat or because they use a fan to drive the heat out (forced convection). Electric fireplaces are mostly for looks. If you just want a little heat in a certain place, buy an inexpensive but safe small unit with a fan.
