Rusty Grill Grates Clean Yet?

by Fire Places on July 20, 2010

I have a Char-Broil Gas Grill which I love. I live in South Florida where everything rusts with the salt air. My grill grates had food left on them for a year (oops) and they became very rusty. I scraped off the major stuff…then used baking soda on them scrubbed again…then applied vinegar..scrubbed again…(with Wire Brush) Then I seasoned the grates with Veg. Oil and like a real man put them back on the grill which was also full of Baking soda vinegar and oil then closed the lid a cranked up the heat…after nearly calling the fire department I figured they have to be clean now. I look this am and the grates are smooth but they are orange in the center section where the food goes…when I rub my finger on them my finger turns orange…so I applied more Veggie Oil (beats for new grates) Are they ok to cook on?

After wire brushing to get iron oxide off . You need to put crisco (lard) on them and season for hour at 300~350 degrees. Same as grand ma would do to Iron skillets. Hope this helps

You need to replace the grates.

The non stick coating is scrubbed away by the wire brush.

Or polish/sand off all the rust and spray with high heat paint to stop the rust. But the food will still stick to it.

I would recommend a new grate and spray with Pam Grilling spray so the food comes off easily without heavy scrapping.

And as for Grand ma’s frying pans, theyre cleaned with paper towling. Even on our frying pans. Spraying with Pam before cooking makes clean up easier.
