Is this house worth buying?

Hi everyone Okay, need some honest advice and opinions here!!
My fiance and I are planning on buying a home in the new year. I have had my eye on a cute little victorian house/cottage(it’s small) for over a year. It’s been for sale for 4 years! (I know, bad sign)
Anyway, I booked an appointment to see it with my Mom since I wanted her honest opinion. We went to see it and it’s cuter than I thought. I loved it! My Mom liked it, but thought it was too small. It has a kitchen, living room, 1 bathroom and 2 bedrooms. It is oil heated but has a gas fireplace in the living room (which the current owner uses as his main heat source) but I was told it would be easy to convert the entire system to gas since the gas line is already running through the house. It is over 80 years old which gives it a lot of character and for such an old home it is in pretty good condition (though I would never buy without getting it inspected) It has a new electrical system too. Okay, it has NO BASEMENT…the foundation is basically a concrete slab which is normal for most of the homes on that street. It’s in a small country town (perfect location where I want to live!) but my Mom thinks no basement is a bad idea..she thinks the re-sale will be very bad. I understand her feelings completely. The thing is, this home is very well priced, very affordable and because of the area, taxes are CHEAP and water is less than we thought it would be too. I mean, it needs fixing up like, new paint, carpet and floors. I don’t like the kitchen and would like to spend ,000 to replace it with a new one (cupboards, floors…)
The size is small but it’s just my fiance and I and we are only 21 and 23 so kids are not in the near future, lol. We want to live there for years and fix it up…maybe one day build onto it since the property line extends to the neighbours driveway so we could easily build onto the living room. The backyard is very private and a good size.
I don’t know what to do. It is very small but I feel that re-sale wise, it would appeal to a retired couple or a family for use as a cottage (since it’s in a cottage area) so I do think there would be a market for it eventually.
My plan is to get a whole new kitchen, keep the natural hardwood floors throughout, get new carpet all upstairs, new paint and add details like stonework behind the fireplace and one day down the road, veneer stone siding on the outside of the house.
Do you think such a small home (if I fix it up the way I plan to) would appeal to anyone?

Do you think for a young couple this property is a good starter home?

Re-decorating my living room; and I’m using the fireplace wall as a feature wall and I’m planning on using one of these two wallpapers, and i have no idea what color to paint the remaining 3 walls ?

Living Room & Dining Room – Knotty Pine?

My living room is about 22 x 16 and 3 of the 4 walls have knotty pine. Long wall with front door and large picture window and two small walls. One wall also has brick fireplace (no mantel). The shelf at the fire place is stone or slate? It makes my living room so dark and old looking. I dont want to paint it but to remove all that will take a lot. The stain is rather dark and all walls wood is in good shape except the small wall has knicks in it from a rocker or something.

My one wall in the dining room also has this… None of it goes with what theme or style I would like to have… Dining room is currently baskets and americana colors. the only thing I can see that works with that is the lines in a basket. Living room, I like the Victorian look, antique, whites, washed colors.

What is the best way to brighten it up?

The couch is very light tan. End tables and coffee table are espresso. The walls are painted a water chestnut color which is very similar to a very light beige. Fireplace painted white as are all of the built in bookshelves. Off white curtains. Lamps and hardware nickel. Modern style living room. I want a good color to make up for all the whites/tans/browns/light beige.

Electric Fireplace vs. Gel Fuel Fireplace?

I am thinking of putting a fireplace in my living room on an interior wall, just for looks and maybe a little extra heat in the winter. I dont know anyone who has either of these fireplaces so i was hoping for a little advice from someone with some experience in this area– thanks for your help.

Call Direct tv first or have best buy install the tv wall mount.?

Trying to figure out the best approach here. We have a living room bare wall for the soon tv wall mount but the cable outlet is on top of a fireplace which is just beside this wall. Can Geek squad fish the cable to this wall? Or do I set up direct tv first to come and re route the cable wires and place a cable out let on the wall first.

Geek squad says they can fish it out but I’m not confident if they can re-route the cables. Direct tv is 49$ to do the custom cable wire installation.

Hey guys im looking for a new place since i know have a bigger family and im looking to sell our house it’s 2100sq ft. 2 full baths/shower bathrooms dineing room living room family room master bedroom and 2 other bed rooms. A big front and back yard horse property *we currently have horses* comes with horse coral 1 Fireplace in living room and 1 Fireplace in family room a good size kitchen tiled floor everywere in the houseexcept the bedrooms. The bedrooms have woodfloor. 2 car garage AC and Heater 2 qaurt yards. House will be furnsihed. So can osmeone help me out give me an estimate? And also i live in Apple Valley Callifornia United States. The house is located near the shoping center A super target, Walmart, Albertsons, winco and schools friendly neighborhood. Mounting an LCD screen on a wall?

I’m moving to a new apartment, and in the living room of this apartment, the most opportune place for the television would be mounted above the fireplace. However, I’m worried. My LCD screen is 42" and of course fairly heavy; it does have the necessary back to be wall-mounted.

How safe is it to mount an LCD? Is there much danger of it falling?
And no, I don’t plan on using the fireplace. The apartment happens to have one, doesn’t mean I want to use it.

Does anyone know what this is or how to find it?

A few years back I saw a mini mobil home for sale. It looked like a little rustic log cabin on the outside (sort of) but the inside had a living room with fireplace, a kitchen, bathroom, and then there was a bedroom/loft upstairs. I would like to purchase one but cannot find anything like it on the web.
It was approximately 50-75 feet long. It had outside paneling that resemebles a log cabin look. The guy selling it told me they were really popular up North. said lots of people use them for weekend getaways. It had a living room to the right when you walk in, it had a kitchen to the left, and it had a bathroom farther to the left. The stairs were right beside the kitchen. It was very small, but it was off of the ground by I would say 3 feet.

What should i do about my electric fireplace that wont go on?

i got a electric fire place that was in my living room and then it worked for a month or so, and ever since then whenever i turn it on the heater will go on for a second and then it will go off and then the heater will stop working. Do i need a dedicated plug or need to call a electrician to fix this?

I have a very old victorian home that is on pillows, it was my grandmothers home it has a lot of sentimental value and I don’t want to lose it. It has 12 foot ceilings throughout, and large cathedral poles in the living room, and 3 fireplaces. It needs work but it has a lot of potential. I want to move this house 70 miles from where it is now, the place I want to bring it to is in the country and it is beautiful there, just as beautiful as this home. Can someone give me some advise on what I have to do to make this dream of mine come true. I really dont want to lose this house, but I have to move, and I cant afford to build.

My daughter has a gas log fireplace in the corner of the living room. The wall above it is flat and even with the front of the fireplace. Can she mount a flat screen TV on the wall directly above the fireplace and not have to worry about the heat harming it.

I am going to lay hardwood flooring in my living room. I have assisted, but never performed this solo. I understand how everything "should" go…I’m just having a bit of trouble envisioning laying the floor around the marble slab in front of the fireplace? Do I just treat the slab like the walls and go within a half inch. Can I lay the quarter round by only nailing to the floor (can’t nail to the slab like you would the wall).

I live in a mansion block in London and have an old Victorian fireplace in my living room with chimney. I don’t think the fire has been used since the good old days but I was wondering how much it would cost to have it fitted up to enable me to have a gas fire. It’s currently boarded up with some wood but this can easily be removed. Who does one contact to get a fire reinstated?

The contemporary couch is sort of a yellowy beige, and the pillows are a crewel floral with a deep red background. The living room is super small and dark. I’ve got a matching beige on the wall, but it looks really dark. Should I go with a lighter version? I was thinking a really muted sage or blue/gray for a change, but they seem too light for the value/lightness of the couch-no contrast. I’m stumped here. The floor is oak, and we have a big fireplace faced with slate. Furniture is darker wood and white trim/built-ins. Thank you!
Thank you! We did add recess lighting, and it helps, but during the day, I’d like to keep the lights off. I love the couch, but have a dark red area rug on the floor that isn’t helping, so I may change that out to start. The slate is pretty dark, slate gray with neutral tones throughout, but still dark, and I’ll probably change that to a lighter, more neutral tile (more demo, yikes!). I’m with you on the beige walls, although I don’t mind a light khaki beige, so your suggestions are what I was leaning towards. I was also thinking of wainscoting in white, the type that looks more architectural to at least lighten up the bottom half of the walls. Thanks so much for writing!

I have dark chocolate brown leather couches a 3 seater and a love seat along with dark brown tables and white contemporary lamps. Everything is very clean lines and modern. In the room there is a a white fireplace with creamy marble surround and beige carpet. On either side of the fireplace wall is a window with white blinds- california shutter style. I’d like to make that my accent wall with a dark rich chocolate brown, or maybe red with perhaps a lighter colour on the other walls… I don’t know. Our living room is next to the kitchen but separated by a half wall with a white column. The cupboards in there are dark chocolate brown and we have stainless steel appliances and cream floors and counter tops. Please any specific colours or combinations and suggestions would be so very appreciate. Thanks in advance.

I just bought a new condo with a gas fireplace in the living room, and I’m purchasing a 40" LCD-TV for the space above it. However, the fireplace has no mantle, which leads me to wonder if the heat escaping upward from the fireplace will shorten the life of the LCD or worse.

Also, will the installer be able to route all the cables and power outlet behind the TV properly, even with the flue directly behind? I imagine with masonry/wood-burning fireplaces, this is less of an issue, since the flue is set back deeper.

I’m moving into a basement and it will be my bedroom and living area. It used to be the 2 car garage of the house – that should give you some sense of size. How will I divide up the two spaces? I also have a beautiful stacked stone fireplace on one side of the room and I can’t decide if I should put the bedroom in the area with the fireplace or give the living room the fireplace. On the other side of the room is double french doors that lead to the outside. Also, I have antique furniture and a white iron bed. I’m trying to figure out a way to divide up this space and I’ve considered decorative screens and open shelving but still have no answers. This basement is contemporary and has new taupe colored carpet. How do I combine the two styles? Thanks for any input.

I’m wanting to put a fireplace in my living room and someone offered to give me the gas log fire box. I can cut a hole in my sheetrock wall and it will go into an unused kitchen cabinet in the room on the other side of wall. Would it be safe to slide the logs and firebox into the wall? What precautions need to be taken or should I not try it at all – dangerous?

The previous owner of my home painted the entire interior an Antique White (satin, except the kitchen and bathroom which are semi-gloss) including all of the walls, front, rear and side doors, floor trim, door trim, closet trim, etc which makes it all look a bit boring. I had considered painting the trim along the floors/doors/closets white (semi-gloss?) to add some much needed contrast but I have heard that may cause the antique white on the walls to look "dingy" Other features of note in the home are a large red brick fireplace with black cast iron wood stove in the living room, the carpet is kind of a steel grey berber throughout, the kitchen and bathroom both have a wood grain vinyl flooring, and all of the interior doors (bedrooms, closets) are wood also. It’s all a bit overwhelming (in the dull sense) with too much of the antique white on the one hand and wood on the other! I need help! Any suggestions for guy with no color sense? (yes maybe thats a bit redundant!)
In the living room the primary piece of furniture is a blue sectional.

As far as the other rooms go there isn’t much in the way of furniture as I just moved in so I can get things to match later after painting.

The wood interior doors are somewhat dark, I don’t know what kind though.

We’ve just moved into our new home which has a very big stone fireplace in the living room. We will never light a fire but would still like it to be a focal point, we’ve thought of buying a grate/bowl and filling it with fairy lights or fitting spot lights at the top and putting logs in a grate…any ideas would be great!
