How do I build a fire in my fireplace using fir wood?

That’s "fir" not "fire". The only wood we could get this late in the season was fir, and so far getting the stuff to light has been impossible. Right now we’re using a grate to put the wood on (that may be the problem, not sure), putting kindling and newspaper under the fir pieces, and lighting the newspaper to get it started. Problem is, the logs just won’t CATCH. The newspaper burns up, and POOF; no more fire. We’ve already bought a bunch of wood, and we can’t return it, so we’ve GOT to burn it…..but we’ve gotta be doing something wrong, right? People light fires with fir all the time, so what’s the problem? And please, honest, educated tips on burning this type of wood would be appreciated, rather than a sarcastic "throw some kerosene on it". Joking about honest questions on a site like this isn’t funny, it’s RUDE……sorry, just had to get that out there. ^^;

Can someone help me out here, please. What architectural design name would you call this old house? It is square and totally symmetrical except on the front 1st floor, the door is on the left and a window on the right (rather than a centered door). It has a front porch with it’s own little roof almost completely across the front with 3 pillars of square posts. The 2nd floor has 2 even windows and there is a dormer? above where the attic is. The roof peaks from all 4 sides and has about a 15" or so overhang all the way around. Inside there is a foyer with the parlor or sitting room on the right and the staircase on the left. There is another door straight behind the foyer to the dining room. Behind the parlor is another room which looks like a bedroom as it has a closet, behind it and the dining room are a bath on the left and kitchen on the right. Then moving to the back of the 1st floor are the laundry area & mud room on the left & a family room (or former bedroom) behind the kitchen. The parlor has a stained glass window and looks like a fireplace was replaced with a stove as the chimney remains, but no fireplace and there is a flue cover. Pocket doors lead to the parlor. The outside of the house is rather plain, no shutters, fancy carvings, or curly cues. It is not a Victorian, Spanish, Mediterranean, or Craftsman. Is it "old farmhouse" or "federal" or something else? Is it "foursquare"? It had some remodeling over the years (inside) and currently has siding on the outside and is painted white. A breezeway from the side mudroom to the garage or (old carriage house) was added. In the garage there is a little "ice room" and an area that looks like it may have been for canning or something. Appreciate your help. Oh, there is no basement and upstairs it looks like there was possibly a maids room, sewing room, in addition to 3 bedrooms. The bathroom is huge…looks like it was originally a bedroom (has a closet).

How to mount a flatscreen television above a non-working fireplace?

I was going to get a 42" TV and mount it above a low fireplace that isn’t functioning (so there’s no heat/soot concerns). The wall above the fireplace is drywall and I don’t yet have a stud finder. Most likely, would there be normal spaced studs in front of a chimney? I’m just concerned about finding something I can screw the wall mount into.

I’m moving to a new apartment, and in the living room of this apartment, the most opportune place for the television would be mounted above the fireplace. However, I’m worried. My LCD screen is 42" and of course fairly heavy; it does have the necessary back to be wall-mounted.

How safe is it to mount an LCD? Is there much danger of it falling?
And no, I don’t plan on using the fireplace. The apartment happens to have one, doesn’t mean I want to use it.

Looking to fit a replacement log burning fire in our fireplace, I want the true closed faced version with the tight fitting locked glass door in cast iron frame, NOT those bi fold versions, the fire place is 29" high by 36" wide and pretty deep. Know of any suppliers in the US?

I live in the North East (NJ) if that factors in at all. I also won’t be using it as a main source of heat. It will be more for a "back-up" source of heat if needed and also help add to the look of our family room.

I have an old fireplace in my apartment. It looks as if it is cast-iron, but someone has painted it white (which I hope to return to it’s original state eventually-next project-any ideas on how to do that are welcomed!!!!) and it is bricked in with red brick. The opening is small 14"X20"???? and rounded, like an upside down "U". I just want to do something different than just have red brick to look at…..I have a ton of acrylic paint and thought I could mess around with those….. any ideas?

The house I just bought has a old cast iron looking insert in the fireplace with "Kalamazoo" engraved on it in big letters. There are two heavy doors (no glass or windows). I couldn’t really find any pictures or information on it. I was curious if anyone knows how much this is worth, and if it would be something worth holding on to and restoring? Thanks!!

the wall is normal 2×4 studs and t-111 exterior. i left a 4" gap around the dimensions of the fireplace but need to know how to seal the wall to the fireplace. it is a large cast iron fireplace. it is not a pot belly stove but a full size fireplace. i have been told i need fireboard. is that all?

How do I lay hardwod floor around marble fireplace slab?

I am going to lay hardwood flooring in my living room. I have assisted, but never performed this solo. I understand how everything "should" go…I’m just having a bit of trouble envisioning laying the floor around the marble slab in front of the fireplace? Do I just treat the slab like the walls and go within a half inch. Can I lay the quarter round by only nailing to the floor (can’t nail to the slab like you would the wall).

I just bought a new condo with a gas fireplace in the living room, and I’m purchasing a 40" LCD-TV for the space above it. However, the fireplace has no mantle, which leads me to wonder if the heat escaping upward from the fireplace will shorten the life of the LCD or worse.

Also, will the installer be able to route all the cables and power outlet behind the TV properly, even with the flue directly behind? I imagine with masonry/wood-burning fireplaces, this is less of an issue, since the flue is set back deeper.

Thanks in advance for advice from anyone who’s been in the same situation!

Hi,

I am planning to buy a 42" Panasonic plasma ED monitor and wall mount it over the fireplace. The question that I have is where should/would I place/hook up/mount the rest of the equipment, i.e. DVD player/ Cable Box/ VCR, etc… There is no mantel over the fireplace. So the TV will be mounted right above the fireplace, but I am not sure where how would the rest of the equipment be placed/ hooked up?

We got a new 32" HDTV for Christmas and we want to mount it to the wall above our fireplace. Are mobile home walls sturdy enough to hold it? It only weighs 25 pounds so it is not a big heavy one. We are going to buy one of the wall mounts. My other concern is that it is going to be above the fireplace, as long as it is high up there should be no problem with the heat right? We live in Florida and we have never used the fireplace, but just in the event that we decide to would it be okay?
