Does anyone know the best way to paint a red brick fireplace a taupe color?

I have a hugh red brick fireplace that’s 23 years old and want to update it by painting it a lighter color to make it appear more modern. I don’t want to ruin it by doing it wrong. Any advise would be appreciated.

Do you have a decorative suggestion for me?

I have an old fireplace in my apartment. It looks as if it is cast-iron, but someone has painted it white (which I hope to return to it’s original state eventually-next project-any ideas on how to do that are welcomed!!!!) and it is bricked in with red brick. The opening is small 14"X20"???? and rounded, like an upside down "U". I just want to do something different than just have red brick to look at…..I have a ton of acrylic paint and thought I could mess around with those….. any ideas?

The previous owner of my home painted the entire interior an Antique White (satin, except the kitchen and bathroom which are semi-gloss) including all of the walls, front, rear and side doors, floor trim, door trim, closet trim, etc which makes it all look a bit boring. I had considered painting the trim along the floors/doors/closets white (semi-gloss?) to add some much needed contrast but I have heard that may cause the antique white on the walls to look "dingy" Other features of note in the home are a large red brick fireplace with black cast iron wood stove in the living room, the carpet is kind of a steel grey berber throughout, the kitchen and bathroom both have a wood grain vinyl flooring, and all of the interior doors (bedrooms, closets) are wood also. It’s all a bit overwhelming (in the dull sense) with too much of the antique white on the one hand and wood on the other! I need help! Any suggestions for guy with no color sense? (yes maybe thats a bit redundant!)
In the living room the primary piece of furniture is a blue sectional.

As far as the other rooms go there isn’t much in the way of furniture as I just moved in so I can get things to match later after painting.

The wood interior doors are somewhat dark, I don’t know what kind though.

Or at least I think it is. the building was built in 1885. The entire face of the fireplace, including the mantal, is of this metal-like material. It has been painted white by previous tenants and the paint is thick. I have thought about stripping the paint and restoring the black cast iron look, but I have also wondered what my outcome would be if I just painted over the white. Or do you have some other idea I can use?
the fireplace is blocked upp with a nasty red brick, but I have an idea for that……
