I just installed an outdoor wood burning fireplace and last night I had my first fire. Instead of using wood, I used a duraflame log which burned nicely for a while but after a couple hours (and a little poking to get the fire going) it started to smoke rather badly. As a result, the marble on front of the fireplace has been stained by the smoke of the duraflame and I’m having a real hard time removing it.

Is there a product or procedure that someone can recommend to remove the smoke damage? I’ve been told that the duraflame logs are basically made from a waxy substance and that the smoke damage caused by one of these "logs" is a little different than smoke damage caused by burning wood. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Choosing The Right Wood Burning Fireplace Inserts

This year many experts are predicting a very cold winter. This means for those who generate heat in their home from a wood burning fireplace you need to make sure that the energy created during a fire is efficiently dispersed throughout your home.

One of the best ways to do this is by installing a wood burning insert for your fireplace. These inserts are cost effective, have easy installation directions so you can install them yourself and you will instantly see the results in lower energy bills.

Things To Know About Wood Fireplace Inserts

The first thing you should know about an insert is that it does not change your mantle and it can help give the overall appearance of your fireplace a new look depending on the model you choose. Basically it is literally an insert that goes directly into your existing wood burning fireplace. Most of the packages available include a firebox, blower and a faceplate. What you need to do is measure the inside dimensions of the fire place so that you can choose the correct size insert.

Once you have chosen the style and look you can then begin the installation process. The good thing about the inserts is most of the installations can be done without the help of a professional. In fact, if you are a bit handy it would make an excellent weekend project. Once it is installed you can begin to reap the rewards of having a very efficient fire place because it is going to create an atmosphere in your fireplace that allows you to use less wood and dispense more heat. It works by efficiently bringing in the cool air, heating it and returning it to the room. The insert helps you to keep the warm air from exiting the chimney.

When you are considering your purchase you should begin by purchasing an insert from a reputable dealer. Most dealers will offer several brands for you to choose from. These brands can include Drolet and Napoleon both of which have an excellent reputation for manufacturing wood burning fireplace inserts. Some other things you should consider are the type of inset that will fit in your budget. The prices can vary depending on the style that you choose.

Also make sure that you purchase an insert that has the approved ratings from the EPA, Environmental Protection Agency. This is important as these ratings let you know that the emissions that are emitted are within the proper range. You especially need to see this if you are planning to buy a used insert. One other important reason to buy an insert from a reputable dealer is you know they will stand behind their products with a warranty and if you ever need parts you will be able to locate them easily.

Lowering Your Energy Bills With A Wood Fireplace Insert

It is the right time of year to start getting your home ready for winter. One of the cost effective ways to do this is by making sure that you fireplace is actually helping to lower your energy bills and you can do that by installing a wood burning fireplace insert. It is an upgrade that will quickly pay for itself.

Benefits and Buying Tips for Gas Fireplace Inserts

Should you buy Mendota gas fireplace inserts? How about Enviro, Napoleon, Heatilator or Osborn? There are all kinds of brands and models out there on the market, and it can be hard to choose the right one for your situation. Let’s take a look at gas fireplace inserts, what they can do for you and your home, and how to buy the right one. It’s really not all that hard. Here’s what you need to know before you make your purchase.

Gas Fireplace Inserts – What Do They Do?

Just what are gas fireplace inserts, anyway? Simply put, they’re an easy, effective way to turn your wood burning fireplace into a more efficient, more convenient gas fireplace. They look a lot like a wood burning fireplace, but generate their heat from natural gas instead. The body is made up of a metal firebox, with gas jets included. These are connected to your natural gas line and provide the flame. Many fireplaces come with a set of decorative logs that are placed over the flame, so that the fireplace looks more natural.

There’s no dust, ash, or carrying wood with a gas fireplace insert, and the whole thing is clean and easy to use. Turn it on or off using just a knob. Install it just by sliding it into the existing fireplace, and having a technician connect the gas jet. The fireplace needs to be vented to prevent problems with fumes, and may have a separate venting pipe to provide air. It may also use the airflow in the room, just like a gas space heater.

Gas Fireplace Inserts – More Efficient Than A Regular Fireplace

Since they’re fired by gas, these inserts are much more efficient than a regular fireplace. When you burn wood, most of the heat goes up the chimney! A gas fireplace insert will provide more heat at a lower cost, and burn much more efficiently than a traditional one. A new fireplace insert could save you money, as well as time and effort. All you need is an existing gas line and a conventional fireplace to house the insert.

You’ll get the warmth and beauty of a regular wood fired fireplace without all the mess and fuss, and you’ll be able to choose any style or look you want. This means that you’ll be able to find the fireplace that works best with your existing mantle and room decor.
A fireplace is a great addition to any home. A fireplace can warm both the temperature and the atmosphere, add charm and make for a relaxing or a romantic night. Unfortunately, not everyone can have an authentic, wood-burning fireplace. Many homes do not come equipped with such a luxury, and the task of installing one in an existing structure can be daunting.

Why Electric Fireplaces Are Growing In Popularity

Even those that have a fireplace may not be enjoying the glow and warmth of a fire as often as they would like. The work involved in collecting and chopping wood, beginning the fire, and keeping up the maintenance of a chimney may seem like small things at first but can grow tedious overtime.

For reasons such as these, electronic fireplaces have begun to grow in popularity. These fireplaces, unlike the traditional kind, are portable, convenient, mess-free and safe.

An electric fireplace has all the convenience of a space heater. You simply bring it home from the store, plug it in, and in minutes you’re basking in the glow of your very own “fire” just by flipping a switch. These units can be installed literally anywhere; in a basement, in an apartment, in an entertainment center or even on the wall. The choice is yours. They can also take the place of an existing traditional fireplace.

With an electronic fireplace, you get all the warmth and coziness of a fire with none of the mess. There’s no wood to chop, no soot to clean, and no chimney to maintain. In fact, there doesn’t have to be a chimney at all, which will also save you on losing heat straight through your roof. Also, these units are unparalleled in their safety. Because they’re electric you aren’t dealing with actual flames, so all safety issues, such as fire hazards and burned hands, are eliminated.

Also, while electric fireplaces have all the convenience of a space heater, it is clearly superior in aesthetic quality. Instead of an unsightly metal box sitting in the middle of your room, you can instead enjoy the peaceful, relaxing sight of a fire.

The Dimplex 23″ Standard Electric Fireplace Insert/Log Set is a great choice for your own electric fireplace. It comes complete with lifelike flame technology that creates the look of a real fire. It also includes realistic, painted logs and an ember bed for additional effect.

This model generates 1,375 watts of warmth and has the capacity to heat up to 400 square feet. However, it also comes equipped for enjoyment year round. On hot days, you can still enjoy the sight of the realistic flames by turning the heat off, an option that will never be available in a traditional fireplace.

Eliminate Safety Hazards With An Electric Fireplace Insert

While an electric fireplace will never totally match the look and feel of its more traditional counterpart, the advantages and benefits of these models are undeniable. These units eliminate safety hazards, tedious clean up, and can be installed anywhere simply by plugging into the nearest outlet. A fireplace is a great addition to any home, and for the cost and quality, electric units can’t be beaten.
