What colour(s) should I paint my new living room/kitchen?

by Fire Places on May 11, 2010

I have dark chocolate brown leather couches a 3 seater and a love seat along with dark brown tables and white contemporary lamps. Everything is very clean lines and modern. In the room there is a a white fireplace with creamy marble surround and beige carpet. On either side of the fireplace wall is a window with white blinds- california shutter style. I’d like to make that my accent wall with a dark rich chocolate brown, or maybe red with perhaps a lighter colour on the other walls… I don’t know. Our living room is next to the kitchen but separated by a half wall with a white column. The cupboards in there are dark chocolate brown and we have stainless steel appliances and cream floors and counter tops. Please any specific colours or combinations and suggestions would be so very appreciate. Thanks in advance.

I think an awesome color combination with chocolate brown would be burgundies and orange or an aqua blue. Those colors would really ‘pop’ against the colors you mentioned in your living room, plus give it a modern appeal to match your kitchen (w/stainless steel appliances) and marble fireplace.

Honestly, I think the best thing to do is look at some photos to get ideas. On http://www.HGTV.com you can look at designer portfolios, search by room, and then search by style (modern, contemporary, country, etc). They have fabulous photos on there, and you can try to copy a room that you like. Look for one that has furniture in the colors you have and see how you like their choice of accent colors.

Good Luck!

Paint the accent wall red with a neutral color on the other walls.

I would go with a real neutral tan color. It will make the white and chocolate pop out. Plus, you always want to think about resale. Neutral colors are easier to sell. When I was house hunting, I found a gorgeous house that had everything I wanted. However, there was a bright yellow room, a red wall, and a room with dark blue walls. The thought of having to paint a neutral color over those dark outrageous walls was enough to make me think twice and not make an offer. My rule of thumb now is ALWAYS go neutral on the walls, floors, and counters. If you want splashes of color, do it with furniture, pillows, or throw blankets since that can more easily be changed.

I love the idea of a red accent wall – something like "red stallion" by Dulux:

Then I would paint the rest of the room a pale purple, almost gray, like "violet surprise":

I would paint most of the walls a soft sandy color and accent wall with aqua or ocean blue. Red isn’t soothing enough for my taste.
