What to do with a cast iron fireplace?

by Fire Places on April 21, 2010

Or at least I think it is. the building was built in 1885. The entire face of the fireplace, including the mantal, is of this metal-like material. It has been painted white by previous tenants and the paint is thick. I have thought about stripping the paint and restoring the black cast iron look, but I have also wondered what my outcome would be if I just painted over the white. Or do you have some other idea I can use?
the fireplace is blocked upp with a nasty red brick, but I have an idea for that……

Do you plan to use the fireplace? If so hiring someone to come in and sandblast it might be the best thing to do. It is probably less expensive than you think. You can have no idea what kind of fumes may come off of that paint. If it is purely decorative then paint it what ever color or way you want.

Ideally, you should strip the paint off to get a better outcome. Removing the insert and having someone sandblast it would give you a great outcome. It all depends what kind of money you want to spend. You could strip it yourself to save money.

go ahead strip it off even if the job is not perfect the not so perfect look will look very good with the cast iron mentalpeace. To give a better look sand it and use copper or dark brass color with the mop paint style and rub it all over. Finally finish it with clear metal spray paint.
It will give an antique brass/copper look
