Why does my fireplace burn wood so quickly? It's a HomeFire product same as a jetmaster?

by Fire Places on June 8, 2010

I have a built in open fireplace and recently it’s begun to burn through the wood so so quickly. (tested different log types) . It can burn through a log basket 60cm x 40cm in just a couple of hours -that’s about 50 or so logs. There is a lever on the right which moves the "flap" (can’t think of a better word) at the opening of the chimney to wide or narrow. I tested both wide and narrow but no obvious change. It’s actually burnt through sections of the fire grate. How do I find more info on how fast or slow it should burn etc etc. Aside from log types, what else may cause the fire to burn so quickly?

The kind of wood is important. Soft woods like pine and firs will burn much faster than hardwoods like oak and cherry wood.

;your little flap thing is the damper. closing the damper just until it doesn’t smoke out the front should slow down the burn. It is the draft going through the fire box which controls how fast it burns. the amount of oxygen available to the fire.

the other thing, most logs at 7-11 stores, Allwoods, and other general hardware stores and the grocery stores are of the soft wood sort. They will always burn faster than the hardwoods.

Hardwoods are hard to start on fire and burn much hotter.

The grates do burn out. Over the past several years I have had a new one about every other year.

I have no clue about commercial fireplaces. mine is custom built when this room was built. No fire box liner other than the fire bricks. It can eat a cord of wood a week if I keep it roaring.
