I have a studip apartment, and the heat comes up in my place near the fridge, but I’d like to put a small nightstand there for my utensils/tools. It has a slope on the bottom where it curves so it’s not touching the grate.

I agree, it can dry the wood in the bureau and cause warping or cracking.
If you feel you must put it there, you might use a deflector to direct the warm air away from the bureau and either back to the wall or out the front or side of the bureau if that is possible.
It probably won’t be a fire hazard but it will warp your bureau.
